If you leave your radio playing softly at night, know that the song you wake up to can set the mood for your day.
I remember dates in my growing up years–specific ones at that–that I can identify with a certain song I probably woke up listening to before I left for school that morning. For example, the song “Let Em In” by Paul McCartney and Wings played in my head all day on Thursday, May 20, 1976. For that reason, my fourth grade crush at the time–a girl named Jennifer–I associate with that record. I always will, for that is probably the song I was listening to on my radio in my bedroom when it was time to get breakfast, and wake up that morning preparing for my day at school. That song put me in a very good mood that day.

Best Wake Up Songs
Beginning with the number 29, I will list my favorite wake up songs of all time.
29. Make It With You (1970) by David Gates and Bread – This tune is an excellent wake up tune, for it is calming. It has a gentle, acoustic feel backgrounded by a beautiful guitar solo by the late Jimmy Griffin. Contrary to popular opinion, the narrator wants to become better acquainted with the girl, not drag her into bed.
28. Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970) by Simon and Garfunkel – This is an empowering song. If you happened to have gone to bed in a bad or sad mood, this song, with its pounding piano, will cheer you up. It is the ideal record to give you the inspiration you need to get on with your day. This song can comfort you whether you have had an argument with your spouse or parent the night before, or incurred a loss in your family.
27. You’re Sixteen(1974) by Ringo Starr – This song is an upbeat tune. Starr’s take on this early 1960s classic by Johnny Burnett, with drumbeats from Starr himself and Jim Keltner can uplift your mood, no matter how bad of a day you think you might have. Just a picture in my mind of Starr singing this song from his drum set just made me want to try that myself.
26. Come and Get Your Love, by the late Lolly Vegas and Redbone(1974) – This song, like You’re Sixteen–is a great song to wake up to, with its even drum tempo and twanging guitar sound. An excellent tune in your head to wake up to. On Thursday morning, June 20, 1974, for some reason, I woke up with this tune in my head, and it stayed with me all day. It conjures up memories of my mother rewarding me for getting such a good report from my second grade teacher, Miss Green, by taking me downtown in Detroit to help her shop at Hudson’s. Yes, music can conjure up happy memories, and also sad.
25. Annie’s Song by John Denver(1974) – This was a beautiful song to wake up to in the summer of 1974. Even though I was sick as a dog on Saturday morning, July 20, 1974, I must have woken up to that song, and I remember being soothed by it.
24. Super Strut, by Deodato – This song, from the summer of 1973, is not only a good song to wake up to, but also a great song to which you can do morning aerobics.
23. Daydreamin’ by Aretha Franklin (1972) – one of the best songs to wake up to because if you happen to be in love with someone (especially when the love is returned) this song can really set your mood for the day and send you on your way.
22. Powerful People, by Gino Vanelli (1974) – a song I enjoy listening to, waking up on a rainy day and nowhere to go. The rain is falling outside, and my radio is playing. It puts me in a melancholy mood, and yet it empowers me to become one of those powerful people Mr. Vanelli sings about.
21. Counting Stars (2014), by Ryan Tedder and One Republic – a fun song to have on your radio as the sleep leaves your eyes. It makes you look forward to the new day, and to look forward to the night time after work is over and it’s dark, and you can go outside and count stars with your significant other before going to bed.
20. Mother of Pearl (1974) by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music – This quiet ballad by this British band provides a gentle start to the day, helping you gradually wake up and face your new day. It calms your spirit as you make your way out of bed and into the shower.
19. Sunshine on my Shoulders, by the late John Denver (1974). This is the classic feel good, wake up song, because you can actually feel the sunshine as it hits your shoulders as you drive to school or work that morning.
18. If Heaven Were Never Promised to Me (1973) by the late Andrae Crouch – this song is for people like me who love their Creator and love to wake up to the thoughts of Heaven where I am going to live with Him forever. But even if that is not actually so, it’s worth knowing Him for who He is. It is a beautiful thought to wake up with as you prepare to leave your house to go about your day.
17. Saturday Morning Confusion, by Bobby Russell (1971) – It is the ideal Saturday morning ditty to wake up to, especially if you’re up for a laugh that morning. It is about enjoying that first day of the weekend, but wanting time alone to watch that game, and says that even the wife, the dogs, the kids, and the whole family–can sometimes get on your last nerve, especially while watching the game of the week.
16. Every Day With You, Girl, by Dennis Yost and the Classics IV(1969) – This sweet love song is at the same time upbeat and puts you in mind of being happy in love. As one of the lines from the song, “Every day I love you more and more, more and more and more,” imply, the fires of love grow a little more every single day I am alive.
15. Gonna Fly Now(Theme from “Rocky)–by Bill Conti (1977) – It’s a good motivational song. It motivates you to fly like an eagle above all the challenges you are going to face during the day, like Rocky did when he was in the ring.
14. People Gotta Move by Gino Vanelli (1974) – This song is a great one to hear first thing in the morning because sometimes you need a song that will give you the proverbial swift kick in the butt.
13. Airport Love Theme, from Vinnie Bell (1970) – This instrumental by studio musician Bell, who also provides the twangy sound of the guitar on Redbone’s Come and Get Your Love,is an ideal wake up tune because it makes you feel like you and the person you’re in love with are soaring above the clouds in a jet. Fog is all around you, and you’re alone above thousands of feet, and not even the worst turbulence can stop you.
12. If flying’s not exactly your thing, why not try Duke Ellington’s A-Train (1939) – The song makes you feel that you’re just waking up while the train’s still chugging along. Its upbeat piano and horns provide excellent background noise for the first part of your day.
11. Let it Be, by the Beatles (1970). This song, with its background choir and pounding piano, helps you put things that may be bothering you into a clearer prospective, giving you sound wisdom for the day ahead: People that get on your last nerve, as well as things you don’t understand…just let it be, it is what it is.
10. House at Pooh Corner, by Kenny Loggins (1971) It reminds you of the sounds of early morning, like the birds chirping as the day is just beginning . This is an excellent song to wake up to. Especially listening to Kenny’s original 1971 version.
9. Been to Canaan, by Carole King (1973). Again, a wonderful song by premier lyricist and gentle soft-pop vocalist Carole King. A feel good song about being in a happy place that she wants to be in again.
8. Poetry Man, by the late Phoebe Snow (1975). If you went to bed stressed, this song will bring you out of it, and ready you for the next day.
7. Let ‘Em In, by Paul McCartney and Wings (1976). The song gives off positive vibes, and puts you in the mood of not only facing the new day, but of welcoming everyone that offers you a “Good morning.”
6. Boogie Man, By K.C.and the Sunshine Band (1976). This song, from the disco era, will get your adrenalin in, and will have you dancing all the way to your car.
5. Viva la Vida by Coldplay (2008) – A catchy tune that will bring a smile to your face in the morning which has a beat to it to help get you going.
4. Morning Has Broken, by Cat Stevens(1971) – This is a good morning wake up tune because it persuades the listener to celebrate the newness of life, the new day, and new beginnings.
3. Steal my Sunshine – LEN – A happy, cheerful and up beat song to wake you up, the intro is a great way to wake you from sleep and the up beat tempo of the track certainly brings a smile your face whatever the time.
2. Wake Up Boo – The Boo Radleys (1995) – A classic morning track from the Boo Radleys that will have you singing along. With lyrics as “Wake up, it’s a beautiful morning” you can’t go wrong!
1. Happy, by Pharrell Williams (2014) – This is the best wake up song of all time. It sounds mellow, yet it will get your adrenalin going. This song will win your heart, and stay with you not only that morning, it will stay with you for the rest of your day. How can you think negative thoughts when you’re listening to this song.
